Multiple manslaughter, aggravated bodily harm resulting from a violation of workplace safety regulations, and negligent disaster: these are the crimes alleged by the Prato Public Prosecutor's Office in opening an investigation into the explosion that occurred on the morning of Monday, December 9, in the loading area of the Eni fuel depot in Calenzano (Florence).

Who are the victims

Prosecutor Luca Tescaroli, who is leading the investigation, has appointed three medical examiners to perform autopsies on the bodies of the five victims. Of those killed, the only one officially identified is Vincenzo Martinelli, a 51-year-old truck driver from Naples. Further details on the identification of the other four workers will be available through the autopsy and DNA tests.

The investigations

The five deceased workers were driving tankers and were in the loading dock area when the explosion occurred. Authorities, led by Prosecutor Tescaroli, are attempting to answer questions about the cause of the accident. Eni is cooperating closely with the judiciary, and an official statement reiterated the company's commitment to supporting the investigation without interference.

Homage to the victims

A tribute to the five victims is planned today, with the presence of the mayor of Calenzano, Giuseppe Carovani, and the president of the Tuscan Regional Council, Antonio Mazzeo. A day of mourning has been declared, with a minute of silence planned, and mourning is also being observed at the regional level.

Strike proclaimed

The trade unions Cgil Firenze, Cisl Firenze Prato and Uil di Firenze have called a provincial general strike in the last shifts of the day. A demonstration will take place in Piazza Vittorio Veneto in Calenzano to express solidarity and ask for greater safety at work.

Reassuring news is coming from the environmental front: the Regional Agency for Environmental Protection of Tuscany (ARPAT) has communicated that the environmental impact has been limited and that soil sampling is not necessary.
