He was about to spend Christmas with his family, his wife, and children, but fugitive Nicola Rullo, a prominent member of the Contini clan, was arrested by the Naples Flying Squad. He was caught in Varcaturo, a town in Giugliano in Campania, in the province of Naples.

Rullo was hiding in a well-furnished apartment on the first floor of a building located in a private park. He also had access to a garage directly connected to the home. When the police knocked on the door, the fugitive hesitated to open it, stating he feared a break-in would frighten his children.

Only after receiving reassurance from the officers, he opened the door and surrendered without resistance, finding himself already on the ground, ready to be handcuffed. A subsequent search confirmed that he was not armed.

There was no trace of the family in the house, who apparently left the shelter several weeks ago.

The charges: kidnapping and extortion with mafia methods

Rullo had been wanted since September 26th, when, together with other members of the clan – 11 of whom had already been arrested in the previous months – he allegedly kidnapped a young man entrepreneur in the Poggioreale district of Naples.

The victim had been brutally beaten with iron bars and wooden clubs inside a house.

The investigation, conducted by the Flying Squad and the Bagnoli police station, led to the issuance of a pre-trial detention order by the investigating judge of the Northern Naples Court. The charges include kidnapping for the purpose of extortion and aggravated assault using mafia methods.

On the same day of the beating, the entrepreneur's father was also taken to the same house and subjected to violence. Both were made subject to an extortionate demand of 375 thousand euros, accompanied by a death threat if the sum was not delivered.

Behind the scenes of the investigation

The investigation, based on on-site inspections and analysis of video surveillance footage, identified Rullo as the main perpetrator of the kidnapping. A second holding facility, located in Castel Volturno, was allegedly used by the Camorra to detain the victim for several hours before abandoning her near the emergency room of the Fatebenefratelli Hospital in Naples.

Rullo, with a long criminal record linked to mafia associations and crimes against the person, had been released from prison last August. In December 2023, he had already been arrested in Spain, where he lived as a fugitive.

It's a really worrying situation, and the most impressive thing is how some criminals manage to live almost normally. Where is Rullo's family? Maybe they knew everything he did, and yet they didn't report it.
