A juvenile inmate of Italian origin, but with a non-EU family, attempted to stab a peer inside the Nisida juvenile detention center in Naples. The attack, foiled by the intervention of officers, was carried out with a rudimentary bladed weapon.

The young man, transferred from juvenile detention center from Milan after a previous escape, he displayed particularly violent behavior even after the episode, swallowing batteries and requiring his transfer to hospital, from which he attempted to escape again.

According to Uspp union representatives Giuseppe Moretti and Ciro Auricchio, the situation within the institute is increasingly critical. "The clients from Naples and the surrounding province are difficult to manage due to their strong ties to local organized crime and the extreme severity of the crimes committed, despite the young age of the inmates. Added to this are the addiction problems and the psychological fragility of the young people.", explain the unionists.

Unions highlight the problem of staff shortages

The increase in admissions, also due to recent news events involving young minors, has further aggravated the situation. "It's increasingly difficult to reconcile the management of local users, which requires constant attention to external criminal dynamics, with that of inmates from the North, who are often the perpetrators of self-harm and other acts of violence.", Moretti and Auricchio emphasize. The lack of staff and the overcrowding of the institute represent further stress factors for the operators.

It is a sad fact that the prisoner tried to hit a peer. The situation in juvenile prisons seems increasingly complicated, and personnel problems seem to make things even worse. Something must be done.
