December promises to be a special month for Mehari House, a property confiscated from organized crime and now a center of legality and culture for the municipality of Quarto. The structure, located in via Nicotera 8, will host a series of events entitled “Casa Mehari in celebration: from confiscated assets to common assets”, an initiative funded by the Campania Region to promote legality through culture, social commitment and solidarity.
The rich and varied programme will start on Friday 6 December with the “Tombolata of Legality”, a tribute to the Neapolitan tradition conducted by the master Franco TestaContinuing until the end of the month, the event will alternate between film screenings, meetings with magistrates and journalists, theatrical performances and concerts.
Among the most anticipated events, Wednesday 11 December will be screened “Fortapàsc”, a film that retraces the story of the journalist Giancarlo Siani, to whom the structure is dedicated. The meeting will follow on December 12th “Freedom under escort”, which will see the participation of journalists threatened by crime such as Mimmo Rubio e Vincent Iurillo, together with members of the police force and magistrates.
On the cultural front, Thursday 12, the writer Amedeo Colella will present his show “No one is born 'learned'”, accompanied by the singer Elena Victoria and by the teacher Francis CuomoFriday the 13th will be the film's turn “Welcome to Casa Esposito”, based on the novel by Pino Imperatore, who will discuss with the students, addressing the topic of the Camorra with irony.
Music will be the protagonist with two unmissable concerts: the 20th December the pianist ergio valente will perform in the concert “Mehari House in Jazz”, while the 27th December They sing it Antonello Rondi will bring to the stage “The urchin of the neighborhoods”, taken from the journalist's book Antonio Romano.
Alongside cultural events, there will be space for solidarity: a bar managed by the cooperative will be open “The Red Oak” and the association's solidarity packages will be available “The Shop of Simple Thoughts”. Mehari House, inaugurated in May 2022, is managed by a temporary association of specific purposes composed of “La Bottega dei Semplici Pensieri”, “La Quercia Rossa”, “Artemide” and “Dialogos”.
Today, this space represents a concrete example of how confiscated assets can be transformed into places of collective rebirth, carrying forward the memory of Giancarlo Siani, the journalist killed by the Camorra in 1985 aboard his Citroën Mehari.
