The Hospital Trust “Sant'Anna e San Sebastiano” of Caserta successfully completed an innovative surgical procedure for the bilateral replacement of the temporomandibular joints.
The operation, performed using custom-designed biocompatible titanium prostheses using 3D printing technology, represents a significant milestone in the field of maxillofacial surgery.
The delicate operation was performed by the team of the Complex Operating Unit of Maxillofacial Surgery, directed by Prof. Pasquale Piombino, in collaboration with Prof. Massimo Robiony and Prof. Salvatore Sembronio.
The patient, suffering from bilateral temporomandibular ankylosis caused by severe beatings and abuse, was no longer able to open his mouth, compromising vital functions such as eating, speaking and breathing, with devastating repercussions on his quality of life and psychological well-being.
“By integrating advanced technology with a patient-centered approach, we have achieved an extraordinary intervention, the first of its kind in Southern Italy,” said Prof. Piombino. “This achievement is the fruit of close collaboration between institutions, the public health service and humanitarian associations that support patients from difficult contexts.”
A few days after the operation, the patient shows significant signs of recovery. “Rehabilitation will allow the gradual restoration of joint functions. He will smile again, a smile that we also make our own, satisfied to have restored his dignity and hope after a life of suffering and marginalization,” concluded the director of the Complex Operating Unit of Maxillofacial Surgery.
