2024 has been called a "black year" for prisons, according to Samuele Ciambriello, ombudsman for prisoners in Campania. This statement is based on a series of alarming data: a significant increase in suicides and deaths, dramatic overcrowding in facilities, a doubling of the number of prisoners awaiting trial, over 19.000 foreign nationals in prison, 17.000 drug addicts, and more than 4.000 prisoners with mental health problems.
A new sign of hope
In contrast to this scenario, a historic gesture comes from Pope Francis who, for the first time in the history of Jubilee, chose a holy door in a prison, elevating the Rebibbia prison to the rank of Basilica.

The article talks about a very serious situation in prisons, but sometimes I don't understand why it focuses only on the numbers. It is also important to consider the stories behind these data and how we can improve the system for everyone.
