A deep hole has been discovered near the second line platform of Pozzuoli station, causing the interruption of rail traffic on the line Cumana. Since this morning, the service has been blocked between the stations of Bagnoli, in the western area of Napoli, and the terminus Torregaveta, in the municipality of Bacoli.
The causes of the formation of the hole, which measures 4,5 meters deep and at least 4 meters wide, are still unclear. Eav, the public transport company of the Campania Region, has stressed that "seismic events in the area" cannot be ruled out. The Cumana line, together with the Circumflegrea, serves the connection between the center of Naples, with the terminus at the Montesanto station, and the municipalities of Campi Flegrei.
Technical interventions have been started immediately, planned for the assembly of two track bundles in order to solve the problem and reopen the line. Eav has recalled that this section will be decommissioned in the coming months with the opening of the new section of the Gerolomini-Pozzuoli line, whose works are almost completed.
To ensure safety, traffic has been interrupted between Bagnoli and Torregaveta, and replacement bus services have been set up, while rail traffic continues regularly between Montesanto and Bagnoli.
