Franco Panariello, 56, originally from Torre del Greco, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the stabbing murder of his wife, Concetta Marruocco, 53, on October 24, 2023, in Cerreto d'Esi, in the province of Ancona. The sentence was pronounced yesterday afternoon after a two-hour deliberation by the Ancona Court of Assizes, presided over by Judge Roberto Evangelisti.
Panariello, who in October had been sentenced to 5 years in prison for the mistreatment to his wife before the murder, he was found guilty of aggravated voluntary homicide, aggravated by the family relationship, the victim's reduced defense (the night time), the use of a weapon and the violation of the restraining order.
At the time of the crime, the man was wearing an electronic bracelet due to a previous complaint of mistreatment, which however did not indicate his entry into his wife's home. The Prosecutor's Office, represented by Public Prosecutor Paolo Gubinelli, had requested life imprisonment.
The defendant's lawyer reported death threats from a relative of the woman
The defendant, defended by the lawyer Ruggero Benvenuto, received the support of his defense, which has already announced an appeal once the reasons for the sentence are published, expected in 90 days. On the sidelines of the hearing, the lawyer Benvenuto reported an intimidating episode: “A relative of the Marruocco family approached me and threatened me, saying 'be afraid because I'll kill you' in Neapolitan dialect. This is a serious matter and I reserve the right to file a complaint”.

It is a very sad and complex case, domestic violence situations are more and more frequent, and it is difficult to understand how it comes to this. Justice must take its course, but prevention is also needed.
