Tree collapse at the University of Salerno, friends report: "Silence and indifference" The Prosecutor's Office is investigating, while the clash between students and the university increases. A phenomenon of "noir tourism" is recorded at the site of the accident.
“We cannot accept what happened. Two young people who were building their future are now fighting for their lives.” This is the cry of pain from the friends of Antonio La Regina and Carmine Fiorillo, the two students seriously injured by the collapse of a tree on the campus of the University of Salerno last November 30. Both are still hospitalized in intensive care at the Ruggi d'Aragona hospital, in critical but stable conditions.
The mobilization, started by friends in Altavilla, has turned into a viral campaign on social media to ask for justice and responsibility. “We want answers from the rector and the institutions. Silence and indifference are unacceptable,” reads the messages also shared by the Spotted Unisa community.
Every evening, the young people of Altavilla go to the hospital to support the families of the victims, supported by psychologists from Ruggi. “It is an immense pain,” they say, “Antonio and Carmine are like brothers to us. Their battle is ours. From that day on, Altavilla stopped living.”
Benedetta Vecchio, of the Altavilla Youth Forum, points the finger at the inertia of university associations: “After 17 days, their silence is a wound. We will not give up and we will continue to maintain high levels of attention. We cannot remain inert.”
In the meantime, the Nocera Inferiore Public Prosecutor's Office, led by prosecutor Antonio Centore, has acquired the documents relating to the accident and is organizing a technical inspection to identify the causes of the collapse. The fallen tree has become a symbol of denunciation, but also the destination of a disturbing phenomenon of morbid curiosity.
The student community gathers around the two boys and forcefully reiterates that this tragedy must not be forgotten. Among the requests, the need to ensure greater security within the university campus emerges.
