The Cava de' Tirreni gynecologist, arrested on charges of sexually abusing a patient during a medical examination, will remain in prison. The Nocera Inferiore investigating judge rejected the defense's request to replace pre-trial detention with house arrest.
The man, who suspended himself from the Medical Association before the interrogation, denied the accusations, claiming that the patient had made everything up. The woman, a foreigner, had reported groping and sexual approachesi during a visit last July, then turning to an anti-violence center and the carabinieri.
The judge, however, considered the woman's statements more credible, highlighting some inconsistencies in the doctor's story. The decision to confirm the precautionary measure is also based on the fear that the man might repeat the crime.
The gynecologist ready to resort to re-examination
The defense could now appeal to the Review Court to try to have the custody order annulled.

It is a very sad case that makes us reflect on the legal system, but also on the trust that we should have in professionals. We hope that the truth will come out and that those who are wrong will be punished for their actions.
