The Corelab, a new highly automated analysis laboratory, has been inaugurated at the Sant'Anna e San Sebastiano Hospital in Caserta. This laboratory manages and processes blood samples completely automatically, speeding up and standardizing diagnostic and reporting times, with a positive impact on healthcare activities throughout the hospital.
The new laboratory also significantly increases the number of samples processed and reduces errors, ensuring high-quality performance. The inauguration was attended by the general and medical directors Gaetano Gubitosa and Angela Annecchiarico, the hospital community, volunteer associations, civil authorities, and the bishop of Caserta and Capua Pietro Lagnese, who officiated the religious rite in the hospital chapel.
"The Corelab installed in our hospital," explained Arnolfo Petruzziello, director of the Analysis Laboratory, "is equipped with the most innovative technology currently available, GLP—Total Lab Automation. It is a hub, a single system that encompasses the individual analytical instruments in the biochemistry, immunometry, coagulation, and hematology departments, enabling them to communicate with each other through a central artificial intelligence system that streamlines the handling and flow of test tubes.

By reading the barcode that identifies the individual test tubes - continues Petruzziello - the system selects the tests to be performed, directs the blood samples to the destination machines, which travel on tracks, similar to small carriages on a toy train, discarding those that are non-compliant or intended for manual tests;
It also stores the processed test tubes in a refrigerator for five days, from which they can be retrieved for further diagnostic testing, and disposes of the samples once all processing steps are completed. These steps, the professional emphasizes, are monitored at all times by healthcare workers, doctors, biologists, and technicians at the Analysis Laboratory via a central monitor and a series of satellite monitors throughout the Corelab, ensuring full traceability of the entire work process.
"The activation of the Corelab," emphasizes General Manager Gubitosa, "is another significant step forward in the organizational and technological innovation process we are implementing at Caserta Hospital. This process, combined with major healthcare construction projects currently underway, is redefining the hospital's image, aiming to meet the health needs of its citizens with increasingly cutting-edge diagnostic and treatment services and pathways."

It is interesting to see how technology advances in the field of healthcare, but I wonder if all patients can have access to this new system, especially those who are not so informed about technological innovations.
