The recent use of VAR has sparked controversy during the Parma-Monza match, which was refereed by La Penna. In the 75th minute, the referee awarded Parma a penalty for contact in the penalty area, but the situation escalated into a misunderstanding. La Penna blew his whistle and allowed Benedyczak to shoot and score the goal that temporarily made it 2-0, but in the meantime, VAR officials called the referee back to review the incident.

After a check lasting over 30 seconds, La Penna realizes that the shirt holding was exaggerated and decides to cancel the penalty.
