On Saturday, December 7, 2024, at 17:00 PM, the neo-Gothic church of Santa Maria Stella Maris, located in Piazzetta del Grande Archivio, will host the inauguration of a special exhibition of nativity scene art by master Ivano Costabile. Organized by the "I Sedili di Napoli ETS" Association, the exhibition aims to promote the church's restoration.
The nativity scene art of Ivano Costabile
Ivano Costabile, a talented Neapolitan artist, presents a collection that explores the animal world in 18th-century Neapolitan nativity scenes. The artist explores the connection between the earthly and the divine through his interpretations of horses, Campanian buffalo, cows, calves, and rams, continuing the tradition of the great 18th-century masters. In traditional nativity scenes, these animals enrich the scenes, representing symbols of strength and spirituality. Master Costabile reproduces these figures in polychrome terracotta and wood, highlighting the precision of the anatomical details and the mastery of the fleeces.
A living tradition
The exhibition highlights the vitality of the nativity scene tradition in Naples, a popular attraction during the Christmas season. For Ivano Costabile, his connection with animals is a family legacy he has cultivated and transformed into art, combining passion and mastery in his workshop, drawing on the experience passed down from his father, Nunzio. This blend of craftsmanship and creativity leads to the creation of works that combine diverse materials, making each piece unique. The exhibition will be open until January 7, 2025, with free admission and no reservation required, from 10:30 am to 13:00 pm and from 15:30 pm to 18:30 pm.
