Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio, president of the Univerde Foundation and former Minister of the Environment, renewed his commitment to the creation of national parks in Sicily and the creation of new protected areas during the presentation of Obiettivo Terra's 2025 agenda in Salerno.
The president emphasized that "the beauty of nature is the reason why Italy is defined as the Belpaese" (beautiful country) and highlighted the importance of tourism in natural areas, villages, and agritourism, considering it a growing phenomenon that contributes to the well-being of inland areas and combats depopulation. Pecoraro Scanio declared that "in 2025, the Ministry of the Environment can finally unlock at least the parks already designated by law," which include the Matese, the Aeolian Islands, the Chieti coast, and the Iblei Mountains.
Furthermore, he proposed 'reviving marine protected areas by elevating them to the rank of marine parks' and extending protected areas into the sea, using offshore wind farms as protection zones.

The Pecoraro Scanio initiative seems very interesting, but more details are needed on how these parks are planned to be created. It is also important to understand how to involve local communities for effective management.
