The probability of fish and mussel thefts in the pre-Christmas period is very high given the cost of the products. But that the theft is committed by a fishmonger himself seems almost a made-up story. And yet it happened.
The protagonist is a 59-year-old fishmonger with no criminal record from Piano di Sorrento. The Carabinieri, on night patrol, noticed him last night in via San Renato on the outskirts of Sorrento. He is near the warehouses of the Euro Ittica Catering company in Sorrento.
He moves in a hurry, very fast, nervous. He loads his van with numerous crates of fish and mussels and then drives away. But he didn't buy that fish: he stole it. Yes, he was an amateur thief.
The scene was noticed and when the call to 112 arrived about the theft, the carabinieri took a few minutes to trace the thief and stop him.
He had just stolen 6 quintals of the most popular fish species on Christmas tables, all stolen and destined for a parallel market. The 59-year-old ended up in handcuffs and then under house arrest.
The stolen goods were returned to their rightful owner.
