The Royal Palace of Caserta increasingly an international and contemporary Museum. The project “Reggia di Caserta in digital: a platform open to the world” was presented this morning, financed for an amount of one million euros with PON Culture and Development 2014-2020 Axis I – action 6c.1.b.
The Royal Palace of Caserta, an autonomous museum institute of the Ministry of Culture, at the end of a complex administrative and technical process, has completed an important and detailed plan for the modernization of digital systems and services. The project has led to the preparation of various procedures for works, services and supplies.
These interventions, monitored by the offices of the Palace, have preliminarily provided for the installation of connections and cabling for an area of approximately 5200 square meters. The following were divided into: the completion of the network and hardware infrastructure of the Museum, covering an area of approximately 28.000 square meters;
the publication of a new institutional website, developed according to the Linked Open Data (LOD) paradigm; the creation of the Vanvitelli Documentation Centre – CDV, as the first documentary centre focused on the life and work of the great architect; the execution of the exploratory/narrative video game of the Royal Palace “One Day at Reggia di Caserta”; the creation of a usable Virtual Reality (VR) model for the Royal Park, entitled Unveiling Vanvitelli’s Garden.
The Reggia in digitale project was conceived with the aim of improving the conditions and standards of offering and enjoying cultural heritage in support of the dissemination of knowledge through the creation of innovative services and systems and the use of advanced technologies.
Today, visitors to the Museum have the opportunity to connect to the Wi-Fi network along the entire museum route of the Royal Apartments and thus access, thanks to QR-Codes scattered along the route, also in-depth digital content. This is thanks to the infrastructure that has allowed the rationalization of the pre-existing hardware IT network, as well as interventions on new LAN and Wi-Fi systems to enhance performance and accommodate the planned tools.
Furthermore, Reggia in digitale makes available to the public of the entire world, through the new institutional website, not only information on visits updated in real time but also its heritage, accessible in Open Data format.
In line with the open government policies of the public administration, moreover, in order to promote knowledge in an accessible and inclusive perspective, the Vanvitelli Documentation Center – CDV was born: a digital document environment where documents of different nature and typology are collected, codified, described, classified, catalogued, in order to make them usable for those interested. The focus of this platform is Luigi Vanvitelli: from the figure of the great architect and his students and collaborators to the cultural, artistic, historical, social environment of his time.
The documentation center contains 72 monographs; 10 early books, including the "Declaration of the Drawings of the Royal Palace of Caserta"; 302 documents from the collection of the Royal Palace's Historical Archives; the entire Vanvitellian Epistolary, consisting of 1568 letters; and the 698 plates from the Royal Palace's Drawings Cabinet. The CDV includes a total of 57.843 photographs with their respective metadata and description records. The collection can be enriched and expanded with new acquisitions and contributions. Reggia in digitale has also provided for an implementation of museum applications made available to the public. The first is an interactive video game that, through the dynamics of dreams, recreates a day in the life of the court at the time of the Bourbons, with a series of missions and puzzles that cross the halls of the Royal Palace and the spaces of the Monumental Park. The characters in the game are inspired by those who actually lived at the Royal Palace of Caserta or played a significant role in its history. The game is available and can be experienced remotely or on site. The video game can be downloaded for free online from the Apple Store and Google Store, for smartphones, and will later also be available on PC.
The second is a usable model of Virtual Reality (VR) through special viewers during dedicated initiatives. Revealing the garden of Vanvitelli It is inspired by the design of Plate I of the Declaration of Designs.
Vanvitelli had thought of a structure of the gardens of the Palace of Caserta more complex than the one actually built after his death. With the viewers it is possible to know the actual plan that the great architect conceived. The reconstruction concerned the central part of the Park, with the Gran Parterre and the typical elements of the formal garden.
The Economic Operators who have carried out the various interventions of the project are: for the design: Sinopia Scarl; for the installation of connections and cabling: Telecom; for the completion of the network and hardware infrastructure of the Museum: Cial. Compagnia italiana allarmi; for the creation of a new institutional website: Corvallis Spa; for the design of the Vanvitelli Documentation Centre – CDV: GAP Srl; for the execution of the first exploratory/narrative video game of the Royal Palace, entitled One Day at Reggia di Caserta: collective TuoMuseo; for the preparation of a usable Virtual Reality (VR) model for the Royal Park, entitled Revealing Vanvitelli's Garden: Oniride Srl.
