Fisciano. “Enough cuts, safe spaces!” This is the message on a banner displayed by students of the University of Salerno during the protest on the Fisciano campus, where last Saturday a 15-meter-high pine tree collapsed, injuring three people.
Among the injured, the student from Eboli, Carmine Fiorillo, 25 years old, is still in critical but stable conditions, hospitalized in danger of life in the intensive care unit of the Ruggi hospital in Salerno. The site of the accident has been cordoned off and placed under sequestration.
During the meeting, a leaflet was distributed denouncing the critical issues of the campus. “A more than legitimate protest” – declared the deputy of the Green Left Alliance Francesco Emilio Borrelli – “The safety and security of students must be guaranteed in university spaces, but this is not the case. Last Saturday a tragedy was almost reached while the responsibilities that now need to be clarified continue to be passed around. When a tree falls, the credibility and competence of the institutions also fall.”

The situation on campus is very serious, but solutions are not in sight. The kids are right to protest, but more attention should be paid by the institutions to avoid similar incidents in the future.
It is true that we need more security, but we cannot ignore the fact that trees are natural and can fall without warning. We need to find a balance between nature and the safety of students.
It's a bit worrying that things are happening like this. Safety in the university must be a priority, we can't wait for incidents to happen to react. I hope the situation improves soon for everyone.
