NAPLES – An unprecedented surgical operation was performed at Monaldi Hospital, where a 67-year-old patient benefited from the simultaneous removal of a laryngeal tumor and the implantation of a cochlear device. The surgery, which marks a world record, was performed thanks to the expertise of the Complex Operating Unit of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, led by Professor Giuseppe Tortoriello.
The patient, suffering from a laryngeal tumor that compromised both her voice and quality of life, underwent an extraordinary operation. The first phase saw the removal of the tumor using a CO2 laser, operated by Tortoriello together with doctors Luigi D'Avino and Vincenzo Della Peruta. The use of the laser, in combination with a 4K endoscopic system and the support of a robotic arm, allowed millimetric precision in the elimination of the tumor mass, preserving the vital functions of the area.
In the same surgical session, the cochlear implant was performed by Dr. Giuseppe Barba, supported by Dr. Rosa Grassia and Dr. Alessia Russo, under the supervision of the anesthetist Nunzia Minale. This device significantly improved the patient's hearing, which had been compromised for some time.
The innovative and revolutionary element of the procedure is represented by the use of the robotic arm, which allowed surgeons to navigate with extreme precision in the complex anatomy of the larynx and ear. This technology increased the safety of the operation, drastically reducing the risk of post-operative complications.
"This intervention represents a significant step forward in our discipline", declared Professor Tortoriello. «The combination of oncological surgery and cochlear implantation in a single procedure optimizes resources and significantly improves the quality of life of patients».
Satisfaction was also expressed by the general director of the Colli Hospital Trust, Anna Iervolino: «Thanks to this innovative procedure, the Hospital Monaldi stands out not only for the excellence of its professionals, but also for its ability to establish itself as a national point of reference in the application of cutting-edge surgical techniques".
