Journalist Andrea Scanzi recently shared his views on the ranking of the most listened to artists on Spotify in 2024, using his YouTube channel as a platform to express his opinions. His critical analysis focused in particular on some artists of the Italian trap scene, including Geolier.
Article Key Points
Scanzi highlighted how music, like any art form, can act as a reflection of contemporary society. This concept guided his commentary on the artists who dominate the Italian charts, suggesting that the popularity of certain musical genres can say a lot about current tastes and trends.
The role of music
“Music is a fundamental litmus test of a society. Like all art, it goes hand in hand with the quality of a people and an era”, explained Scanzi. “I mean, you know? First place Geolier. Someone who has no talent whatsoever. Naples, a city that has given birth to extraordinary music like that of Pino Daniele and James Senese, today brings Geolier to the top. But what are we talking about?”
And without mincing words he attacks all rappers: “Sfera Ebbasta, Lazza, Tedua, Anna, Guè, Kid Yugi, Capo Plaza, Shiva and Tony Effe. There is no hope. Those who listen to this stuff cannot vote well, and in fact they do not vote or vote for embarrassing politicians”. “I p' me, tu p' te” by Geolier second place at the last Sanremo Festival. “A title that sounds like a tax code and that listening to is like hitting yourself in the head with a hammer”.
And then the political sociological conclusion: “Like a thunder by Rose Villain? Sex and Samba by Tony Effe, which is the ugliest song in the universe? Guys, let's be serious. And you're surprised if the country goes to pieces?”.

Scanzi is right, but I don't know if Geolier is the right example. Music today is strange and I don't really understand what messages it sends. Sometimes it seems like just noise, but maybe that's what people want.
