In 2021, "Squid Game" surprisingly dominated Netflix's charts as the most-watched series globally. The second season, consisting of seven episodes, premieres on December 26, while the third season is already in post-production. "Squid Game 2" aims to replicate the success of the first season, with Hwang Dong-hyuk returning as director, screenwriter, and producer. The director completed the sequels' screenplay in just six months, stating, "I'm not sure I'll ever be able to write something this fast again."
The protagonists return to the survival game with new deadly challenges. Lee Jung-jae reprises his role as Gi-hun and praised the director, calling him “a genius.” The project has also opened international doors for Lee Byung-hun, who will reprise his role as the antagonist, noting how rewarding it is to attract new viewers with this work. Wi Ha-jun and Gong Yoo will also return, while newcomers include Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, and more.
Expectations are high, and the second season has already received a nomination for best drama series at the upcoming Golden Globe Awards. But in Korea, history teaches us that sequels rarely surpass the originals, as evidenced by Yang Dong-geun, who makes his debut in the cast.

The production of “Squid Game 2” also addressed the theme of diversity, introducing a transgender character played by Park Song-hoon. Hwang commented that, unfortunately, there is still a lack of openness in Korea regarding the LGBTQ+ community: “Unfortunately, many groups are marginalized and overlooked by society, which is heartbreaking.”
Finally, the “Squid Game” universe continues to expand with plans for an English version and a reality show inspired by the series.
