The final phase of recovery of the photographic archive of Francesco Jovane, a famous photojournalist of the twentieth century, begins. The recovery, conservation and enhancement operations are being handled by the Museo Didattico della Fotografia (Mudif) in Sarno.

The collection, which includes iconic images of historical events and famous figures, is considered to be of significant historical interest and will soon become part of the national cultural heritage.

Jovane's Priceless Shots

The archive contains approximately 50.000 phototypes, documenting significant historical moments such as the Budapest uprising in 1956, the Vajont tragedy and the social and cinematographic events of the last century. Images of famous people such as Salvador Allende, Vittorio De Sica and Sophia Loren are an integral part of this precious collection. After an initial phase of review and conservation, the digitalization and cataloguing on a ministerial platform will now proceed.

The Important Contribution of the Institutions

The project was supported by the Superintendence of Archives and Bibliography of Campania, as confirmed by Vincenzo Petrosino, president of the association Il Didrammo. Thanks to funding and collaboration with the Mic, the Mudif team worked hard to ensure the safety and conservation of the collection. “We are working on SigecWeb, our cataloging will make the material available as part of the Italian cultural heritage,” explained Rosario Petrosino, scientific director of the museum.

A complex process is now underway to ensure that the material becomes accessible to the public, allowing the enjoyment of the extraordinary photographic and documentary testimonies contained in this historical archive.
