A night of madness in Naples for the Cippo di Sant'Antuono fires, with accidents, destruction, assaults and stone-throwing against police vehicles, blocked traffic and inconvenience for residents.

The worst situation occurred in the Sanità district where there was an assault on the carabinieri cars that were hit by stones. But problems also occurred in via Salvator Rosa where the garbage bins were set on fire and then in Piazza Mercato and in the Spanish Quarters.

The appeals launched by everyone to celebrate responsibly were of no use, just as the seizures of large quantities of wood by law enforcement agencies.

A shopkeeper from the Sanità district: “Scenes like this are inconceivable”

A shopkeeper from the Sanità district commented: “Yesterday I watched a live broadcast on TikTok about the Cippo di Sant'Antuono in Rione Sanità, and I was deeply outraged by what I saw. It is inconceivable that such an important tradition is tainted by scenes of violence such as the throwing of stones at the police.

There is no justification for this behavior: it is indefensible, it is not acceptable, and, above all, it does not represent the true spirit of the neighborhood and its traditions.

Rione Sanità is a symbol of culture, history and resistance, but acts like these do nothing but destroy the image of a place that deserves respect and valorization. Violence is never the answer. Celebrating traditions should be a reason for pride and unity, not chaos and clashes.

We all need to reflect on what is happening and ask ourselves what message we want to give to the rest of the world. This is not progress, this is not civilization. It is time to change our attitude and show the best of us, not the worst.”
