The Sports Event Security Analysis Committee (CASM) met yesterday to discuss security measures related to the Serie A match between Atalanta and Napoli, scheduled for January 19. The match is considered high-risk due to the historic rivalry between the two fan bases, exacerbated by violent incidents involving Atalanta supporters, twinned with those of Eintracht Frankfurt, and Napoli ultras during the 2023 Champions League matches.
Clashes had occurred both in Germany in February and in Naples in March during the first and second legs of the round of 16. These events contributed to exacerbating tensions, raising significant concerns about public order and safety ahead of the match.
The Casms has asked the Prefect of Bergamo, after consulting the Police Commissioner, to evaluate the possibility of adopting restrictive measures. Among these, the ban on the sale of tickets to residents of the Campania Region and the limitation of sales for the away sector to only holders of a loyalty card of SSC Napoli, provided they are residents of Regions other than Campania.

It is important that safety measures are taken seriously, but sometimes I wonder if they are actually effective. Fan clashes are a long-standing problem that does not seem to be improving. Restrictions may not be enough.
