NAPLES – They had imposed a monthly protection fee on merchants and entrepreneurs in Giugliano and the surrounding areas in order to be able to continue working in peace by relying on their belonging to the Mallardo clan.
Seven have been arrested since this morning. The Anti-Mafia Investigation Directorate, on behalf of the District Attorney of Naples, has executed a precautionary custody order issued by the Judge for Preliminary Investigations of the Court of Naples, at the request of the Anti-Mafia District Directorate.
The operation led to the arrest of seven people, four of whom were held in custody in prison and three under house arrest. The suspects are seriously suspected, to varying degrees, of mafia-type association and crimes such as extortion, attempted extortion and fraudulent transfer of assets, aggravated by the aim of facilitating the Mallardo clan.
Il clan, known for his operations in Giugliano in Campania, allegedly exercised control over the territory through the intimidating force deriving from his membership in Camorra organizations.
According to the charges, several entrepreneurs were threatened to force them to pay sums of money, necessary to continue their business activities without interference.
The money flowed into the common fund
The illicit proceeds collected would have been used to support the clan's members and feed a "common fund", intended both for the support of the organization and for reinvestment in speculative operations.
