A cave subject to landscape and naturalistic constraints on the island of Ventotene it was transformed into a residential annex, sparking indignation and legal action.
The protagonists of the story are General Giovanni Macioce, extraordinary commissioner for the safety of the Santo Stefano prison, and two local entrepreneurs, Luigi and Ercolano Sportiello. The Municipality of Ventotene, in recent days, issued and executed an order to block the works, in response to a procedure that would otherwise have led to the appointment of a commissioner ad acta by the Lazio Region.
The intervention aims to stop a completely abusive project that involves the construction of reinforced concrete structures inside a cave of very high historical and environmental value. The position taken by the mayor of Ventotene, Carmine Caputo, is very harsh: "Respect for the law and above all the protection of the naturalistic heritage of Ventotene must be the priority. It is unacceptable that a cave of high historical and naturalistic value has been transformed into a home".
The investigations, which brought to light the alleged violations, directly involved the former general of the Guardia di Finanza and the two Pontine entrepreneurs. The case has already reached the court: the trial against the three defendants will begin at the court of Casino next March.

The article raises important questions about environmental protection and compliance with the law. It is worrying to see how structures of historical value can be transformed into homes. We hope that the authorities will act seriously to protect these places.
