A cave subject to landscape and naturalistic constraints on the island of Ventotene has been transformed into a residential outbuilding, sparking outrage and legal action.
The protagonists of the story are General Giovanni Macioce, extraordinary commissioner for the safety of the Santo Stefano prison, and two local entrepreneurs, Luigi and Ercolano Sportiello. The Municipality of Ventotene, in recent days, issued and executed an order to block the works, in response to a procedure that would otherwise have led to the appointment of a commissioner ad acta by the Lazio Region.
The intervention aims to halt a completely illegal project involving the construction of reinforced concrete structures inside a cave of immense historical and environmental value. Ventotene's mayor, Carmine Caputo, has taken a very strong stance: "Respect for the law and, above all, the protection of Ventotene's natural heritage must be the priority. It is unacceptable that a cave of such great historical and natural value has been transformed into a residence . "
The investigation, which brought to light the alleged violations, directly implicated the former general of the Guardia di Finanza and the two Pontine businessmen. The case has already reached court: the trial against the three defendants will begin in the Cassino courthouse next March.
