A new episode of violence has rocked the Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi prison, where a 32-year-old inmate from Salerno, Antonio Novelli, was brutally attacked yesterday inside the Avellino prison.

The man, according to what was reported by his lawyer Salvatore Aiello, was calmly walking in the corridors when he was attacked by unknown individuals.

The beating was so violent that it left Novelli unconscious on the ground. The 118 paramedics intervened on the scene and stabilized him and transported him urgently to the “San Francesco” hospital in Oliveto Citra. Given the serious injuries he suffered, including a fractured tibia and fibula, the 32-year-old was then transferred to the better equipped “Ruggi” hospital in Salerno, where he underwent delicate surgery.

At the moment his conditions are stable, but the case is shrouded in mystery. The reasons for the attack and the identity of the attackers are still unknown. Investigators are investigating thoroughly to shed light on what happened in the prison of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi and bring those responsible to justice.

Novelli's lawyer expressed deep concern about the incident, underlining the need to guarantee security inside prisons and to clarify the dynamics of this latest episode of violence.
