The Basilica of Sant'Antonino in Sorrento will be the evocative stage for a Tableaux Vivants show scheduled for Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 January. This event promises to take the audience on an exciting journey through the works of Jusepe de Ribera and Michelangelo Merisi, better known as Caravaggio.

The performance is part of the seventeenth edition of the cultural festival “M'illumino d'inverno”, curated by artistic director Paolo Scibilia.

### The art of the Tableaux Vivants

The show, entitled “Ténèbres et Lumière – Living Paintings from the Paintings of Jusepe de Ribera and Michelangelo Merisi”, is the result of the artistic collaboration between Paolo Scibilia and Dora De Maio. The company “Ludovica Rambelli Teatro” will stage thirty-seven living canvases, with thirteen works by Spagnoletto and twenty-three by Caravaggio, using the bodies of the actors and everyday objects. A single source of light will illuminate the scene, creating a visual effect that will be enriched by period music, ranging from Baroque to contemporary.

### From realism to chiaroscuro

The selection of works by Spagnoletto and Caravaggio has been carefully studied, highlighting the dark realism of Spagnoletto that intersects with the dramatic chiaroscuro of his canvases. The scenes represented cover a wide spectrum: from biblical episodes to scenes of daily life, up to intense moments of torture, offering a show of strong visual and emotional impact. This project, originally educational, has seen its appreciation grow in cultural and artistic circles, both in Italy and abroad, thanks to its ability to reinterpret masterpieces through evocative and interdisciplinary performances. The event promises to offer a deep immersion in Spanish and Italian Baroque art, giving life to a unique theatrical experience.

The tableaux vivants event seems very interesting and well organized, but I don't understand how the bodies of the actors can do justice to such important works. I hope that the experience is really engaging and that it attracts many spectators.
