The family of Gianni Cenni, a 51-year-old Neapolitan pizza chef, married and father of two children, is living hours of anguish. Cenni was captured by the Ukrainian army while fighting among the ranks of pro-Russian mercenaries, as reported exclusively by Today.it.
The man, known for having worked in prestigious restaurants, including “La Figlia del Presidente” and the Italian consul’s restaurant in Samara, Russia, was captured between January 7 and 8 in the Kupyansk area, in the Lugansk region. According to reconstructions, he was engaged in a reconnaissance operation behind enemy lines.
The Honorary Consul of Italy in Samara, Gianguido Brebbo, contacted by Today, confirmed that he knew Cenni: “He was my employee until about a year ago, then he quit. I knew he had moved south of Volgograd, but I don’t remember exactly where. He was a particular type, Neapolitan, with an over-the-top character. Knowing now that he went to fight doesn’t surprise me.”
The capture of hints remains unclear
The circumstances of Cenni's capture remain unclear, but his family fears for his safety, while tensions between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian mercenaries make the situation on the ground increasingly dramatic.
