Naples. There are two investigations into the death of Immacolata Fiorentino, the 45-year-old mother of three who died on January 3 at the Bianchi clinic in Portici after undergoing gastric banding at the Nuovo Policlinico in Naples.
The general management of the Federico II University Hospital has set up an internal commission of inquiry to shed full light on the matter and acquire all useful elements. The goal is to "acquire all useful information", reports the general management, which expresses "the most complete closeness to the family".
The second is that of the Naples Prosecutor's Office after the woman's brother, assisted by the lawyer Hilarry Sedu, reported the case to the Police Station of the Ponticelli neighborhood in Naples, reconstructing the ordeal she experienced.
The operation, performed on November 22, did not end as expected due to complications during the procedure. Fiorentino suffered a pulmonary embolism followed by cardiocirculatory arrest, and was hospitalized in intensive care for 22 days. After an apparent improvement, the woman was transferred to sub-intensive care and subsequently to the Bianchi clinic for rehabilitation, where she died.
The victim's family, shocked by the tragedy, filed a complaint with the police asking for the causes of death to be ascertained. The family's lawyer stressed that the woman was in good health before the operation and that her death occurred in circumstances that are yet to be clarified.
