Despite the Christmas break, the flu is making its presence felt again. According to the latest data from the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS), the first week of 2025 saw an increase in cases of flu-like syndrome, with an incidence that exceeded 11 cases per thousand patients.
Those who pay the price are mostly young adults and the elderly, while the situation among children, although still high, seems to be stabilizing. In particular, the youngest, under five years old, are paying the highest price for this new wave of influenza.
“The circulation of influenza viruses is increasing, but it is not the only one responsible for this picture,” explains the ISS bulletin, underlining the role of other respiratory viruses in the spread of influenza-like illnesses.
Geographically, the most affected regions are the North-East, Tuscany, Marche and some regions in the South such as Campania, Puglia and Sicily.
Experts urge the population to remain vigilant, especially in the age groups most at risk, and to follow the indications of health authorities to contain the spread of the virus. Among these, the importance of washing your hands often, covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing and, for the most fragile subjects, getting vaccinated against the flu.
