The renowned Rome Opera House hosted a special celebration in honor of the 125th anniversary of Giacomo Puccini's masterpiece, "Tosca." Conductor Francesco Ivan Ciampa, a native of Avellino, made his debut on the podium for this prestigious production.
The cast is enriched with voices from the Neapolitan school, including the Neapolitan tenor Vincenzo Costanzo in the role of Mario Cavaradossi, and the choirmaster Ciro Visco.
A tribute to tradition
The performance was directed by Alessandro Talevi, who recreated the original atmosphere of the historic premiere thanks to sketches preserved in the Ricordi Archive. Maestro Michele Mariotti conducted the orchestra, highlighting the expressive power of Puccini's score. Among the stars of the opening performances were Saioa Hernández, Gregory Kunde, and Gevórg Hokobyán. For the repeat performances on January 17 and 19, the title role will be played by Anastasia Bartoli, accompanied by Vincenzo Costanzo and Daniel Luis de Vicente.
A production woven with Campanian talent
The production boasts a significant participation of artists from Campania, characterized by a deep regional imprint. Francesco Ivan Ciampa, in addition to being at his first appearance on the podium of the Costanzi, is already known for his direction appreciated in other prestigious venues. At his side, Maestro Ciro Visco leads the choir, composed partly of singers from Campania, including Salvatore Minopoli, Achille Del Giudice, Emily Santo, and others.
A work of passion and politics
"Tosca" continues to be a landmark opera for its intertwining of passion, politics, and power. The drama, set in late 19th-century Rome, explores contemporary themes through characters such as Baron Scarpia, an emblem of power and corruption. Anastasia Bartoli plays Tosca, a character who dominates the stage with her strong and complex presence. Despite turbulent relationships and suffering, the opera culminates in a powerful portrayal of the tensions between faith, power, and love.

The article is interesting but there are some things that I didn't understand very well. The choice of artists from Campania is nice, but I don't know if their experience is sufficient for such an important production. I wonder if the actors have done adequate rehearsals.
