A stop in Castellammare di Stabia for the writer Lorenzo Marone: the author reconfirmed his bond with Castellammare, presenting his new literary work, “La vita a volte capita” published by Feltrinelli, to the loyal public of the city.
The meeting, organized by Professor Carmen Matarazzo, President of the Association “Achille Basile – Le Ali della Lettura”, took place at the welcoming headquarters of the Circolo Internazionale, a true cultural reference point in the city.
At the speakers' table, in addition to the writer and President Matarazzo, who introduced the meeting with real enthusiasm and expressed greetings to the guest and the public, the Editor and creative writing teacher Gianluca Calvino and the journalist Emanuela Francini, who interacted affably with the author on the key points of the text, fully capturing the attention of the public.
The protagonist of “La volte capita” is Cesare Annunziata, an old acquaintance of readers who followed his adventures in “La tentazione di essere felice” published in 2015. A novel also famous for having landed on the big screen with the film “La tenerezza”.
Realism and complexity of human relationships, themes dear to Lorenzo Marone, find their maximum expression with Cesare Annunziata.
After about 10 years, the author therefore found it stimulating to focus on the evolution of this emblematic character. To take a very intimate, but specular, journey through his life experiences. At the dawn of 83 years, Marone explained, the angular and gruff protagonist of the story recognizes the saving sense of beauty, to which he reserves gratitude.
The superficiality that shines through in “The temptation to be happy” is only apparent, he added. Cesare has always been a deep person, but he was running away from pain and choices that he avoided for fear of imposing himself and triggering conflicts.
“Cesare has made many mistakes but he is a person who at 83 years old tries to make his experience available to others, he is not an old man who tries to spend the day, but an old man who, walking his dog, is still curious and passionate, who still seeks a sense of beauty in human relationships and above all to bring the testimony of his failure or his non-choices to young people.”
The author also illustrated how the protagonist of the novel was able to crumble the cages in which each tends to entrench himself in the first part of his existence. The human being in that phase is in fact disarmed in the face of life, devoid of an identity structure and predisposed to giving up. He lives irremediably under "a layer of dust" or does not live at all. Cesare instead had the courage to look deeply inside himself.
He has come to a process of rebirth that allows him to face everyday life in a more authentic version, closer to his true nature. “Cesare teaches us that this process is feasible, that it can be done until the last moment of life. Until the last moment, one can decide to go deep”.
The contents illustrated by the writer, the reading of some excerpts from the book – which once again highlighted an elegant and engaging style – allowed us to then dwell on the themes of parenthood and the “poetry of the minuscule”, skillfully introduced by the speakers. Through the first – which outlines human frailties – Cesare Annunziata faces his own remorse with discernment and deep introspection, which make recognizable the profound humanity underlying his apparently gruff character.
With the “minuscule”, instead, the elderly character rediscovers the wonder and importance of small things, which hide great meanings and immense beauty. An attention to detail that produces refreshment and harmony even in the complexity of a frenetic and sometimes frustrating life.
“La vita a volte capita” is therefore a perfect and significant combination of introspection and powerful irony on themes of considerable value. Lorenzo Marone highlights it with undoubted sensitivity, the same that has distinguished him for years.
It is also a novel that, centered on the figure of an elderly gentleman and his journey of redemption, attracts for the originality of the choice of the protagonist, so little widespread in the contemporary narrative panorama. The reader will therefore be able to reflect and compare with the topics covered and, why not, find answers. Those inspired by wisdom. Those capable of giving comfort to the human soul.
