Lieutenant Scola, originally from Casal Velino and commander of the Carabinieri station in San Damiano d'Asti, had suffered a serious domestic accident on January 2, while he was in his home during the Christmas holidays.

During maintenance operations, Scola fell from a ladder, suffering a severe head trauma.
