Lionel Messi may not have closed his World Cup chapter yet: after leading Argentina to victory in Qatar in 2022, the Inter Miami ace could also be a key figure in the next edition of the tournament.

The technical commissioner of the Selección, Lionel Scaloni, confirmed this to the microphones of DSports said: "He has the desire to play in the 2026 World Cup, like everyone else. But we'll have to see how each player gets there.". If he were to take part in the expedition, Messi would be 39 years old at the time of the tournament, a factor that will inevitably weigh on his decision and that of the technical staff.

Scaloni then confirmed that there will be several changes compared to the World Cup-winning team in Qatar. Among the certain absences is Ángel Di María, who announced his retirement from the national team after winning the Copa América last summer. "It was a decision that matured over time: he retired as a winner and as one of the best footballers in Argentine history.", the coach underlined.

The focus now turns to the new talents ready to take up the legacy of the 2022 champions. "We have a solid foundation, but it's time to give a chance to young people who weren't present in Qatar. Why not think about someone who can give us a hand?", added Scaloni, hinting that the future of the Selección could see the entry of new stars alongside the veterans.
