Naples – “I don’t think we can militarize the squares, nor prevent people from going out into the streets because we are in a democracy”: said the mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi.
Three days ago the Court ruling provided for compensation by the Municipality of Naples of 230 thousand euros in total for 7 residents of Piazza Bellini for disturbing the public peace.
"Also because - the mayor continued - everyone likes to go out on the streets, even residents. Therefore, we must avoid extremism. We must, obviously, balance the needs, also understand the discomfort of those who live in central places that are often the object of the presence of people 24 hours a day. It is not a question of militarization, it is a question of rules".
Regarding the statements of the vice president of Anci Bonajuto on the lack of resources and regulations, Manfredi declared that “Bonajuto expressed what is the position of all of us.
These things (related to Movida, ed.) have already happened in other cities in Italy. Clearly there are rules that conflict with each other. Therefore, we need to find the best way to balance everyone's interests. This is why we need rules at a national level too".
“Clearly,” Manfredi continued, “there is, first of all, individual freedom. So, people are on the streets and we cannot stop them. Then there is freedom of enterprise, another factor guaranteed by primary rules and principles.
Finally, there is the legitimate request of residents to have more tranquility and better liveability. We need to put together all the needs, but we know well that the rules often, as happens in Italy, go in the opposite direction. Therefore, we need to find a synthesis with respect to the many rules and liberalizations that have been introduced”.
