Naples – A new gazebo has sprung up in the pedestrian area of Via Scarlatti, sparking outrage among residents already exasperated by the phenomenon of "wild tables" that has invaded the city streets.
Gennaro Capodanno, president of the Comitato Valori collinari, has launched an online petition that has already collected over two thousand signatures. The petition, addressed to the prefect, the police commissioner and the mayor of Napoli, calls for immediate interventions to free the sidewalks from illegal occupations by bars and restaurants.
“The sidewalks have been transformed into veritable jungles of tables and chairs, making life difficult for pedestrians, especially those with disabilities,” denounced Capodanno. “It is unacceptable that people have to slalom between the chairs or even get out onto the street to get through.”

The phenomenon of “wild tables” is particularly evident in the Vomero neighborhood, where the illegal occupation of public land has reached alarming levels. Capodanno has also asked for the intervention of the judiciary to ascertain any responsibilities in the inertia of the institutions.
“We ask the authorities to intervene firmly to restore the right of citizens to move freely on the streets,” Capodanno concluded. “The sidewalks are public spaces and must be returned to the citizens.”
