Carabinieri Colonel Fabio Cagnazzo has decided to appeal to the Court of Cassation to contest the precautionary custody order issued against him as part of the investigation into the murder of Angelo Vassallo, the "fisherman mayor" killed by gunshots on 5 September 2010 in Acciaroli.
Assisted by lawyer Ilaria Criscuolo, Cagnazzo aims to overturn the decisions already confirmed by the investigating judge and the Review Court of Salerno, arguing the existence of "illogical profiles" in the motivations and "evident contradictions" in the accounts of the collaborators of justice.
The investigations, reopened several times over the years, have had a turning point in recent months with the arrest of four people: in addition to Cagnazzo, the carabiniere Lazzaro Cioffi, the entrepreneur Giuseppe Cyprian and the former collaborator of justice Romulus Ridosso.
All are accused of having participated in the organization of the crime and the subsequent diversion of the investigation. According to the prosecution, Angelo Vassallo was killed after discovering a drug trafficking operation managed by the suspects in Acciaroli and about to report them.
Cioffi, represented by lawyers Franco Liguori and Giuseppe Stellato, also filed an appeal with the Supreme Court. Among the main points raised by Cagnazzo's defense are the doubts about the precautionary requirements, more than 14 years after the facts, and the "deficient, unclear and not very linear" reasons expressed by the Review, which would overlap with those already formulated by the investigating judge.
The lawyers also contest the testimonies of the collaborators of justice, collected largely after 2022 and believed to be influenced by media reconstructions, such as those of the television program Le Iene. The defense now aims to reopen the precautionary phase, highlighting alleged investigative gaps and the unreliability of some evidence.
The Supreme Court's decision could represent a new chapter in a legal case that, after more than a decade, continues to raise questions and fuel tensions.
