The leak occurred in a tank where maintenance work was being carried out by four workers, employees of an external company – Cofrin – that was working on the expansion of a warehouse. Three of them were injured, probably intoxicated by the fumes. While Spasiano remained inside.
The intervention of firefighters of the Provincial Command of Caserta was triggered at 16:00, after the report of a serious ammonia leak from a plant of the company. Three teams were operating on site: one from the central headquarters, one from the Aversa detachment and one from the Marcianise detachment.
The particular nature of the accident also required the intervention of the Nbcr units (for nuclear, biological, chemical and radiological risk) of Naples and Caserta, with the support of a self-protecting vehicle and a tanker. The recovery of the victim was difficult due to the density of the toxic cloud produced by the accident
. For safety reasons, the entire area surrounding the company – including the neighboring factories – was evacuated. In the same Frigo Caserta on December 31st, the 39-year-old employee died Pompey Half-Cape, crushed by a forklift.
The Municipality's notice: "Keep doors and windows closed"
The Municipality of Lusciano invites citizens to keep doors and windows closed. “Informally, recommendations have been received from the Prefecture of Caserta aimed at avoiding that, from breathing toxic substances, physical complications may arise for the weakest citizens and those with respiratory diseases. Therefore, citizens are invited, as a precaution and pending any official communications, to keep doors and windows closed and any forced ventilation system”.
Uil: “Another death at work at Frigo. Drastic measures”
"This is yet another accident in this company, which shows how in many places safety at work is not taken seriously, highlighting serious shortcomings. This is why we continue to insist on requesting more drastic measures, such as the recognition of manslaughter at work and the establishment of a dedicated Prosecutor's Office".
Giovanni Sgambati, general secretary of Uil Campania, stated this regarding the accident that occurred at Frigo Caserta, where a worker from an external company died following an ammonia leak from one of the company's tanks.
Cgil: “Dismayed by the accident at Frigo Caserta”
“We are shocked by the news of yet another fatal accident at work that occurred at Frigo Caserta, a company in Gricignano di Aversa, where a gas and ammonia leak caused a large fire that also involved several workers, who were poisoned. The victim, a worker from an external company, from what we understand, was carrying out maintenance work near the exploded pipe.
This is the second fatal accident at work in 10 days within the same company. It is unacceptable that safety is not the primary value within the workplace and unacceptable are the laws that worsen working conditions and that, through the chain of contracts and subcontracts, unload the lack of safety on the skin of the workers, in pursuit of profit”. This is what the general secretary of Cgil Caserta, Sonia Oliviero, and the general secretary of Filt Cgil Caserta, Tommaso Pascarella, declared in a note.
