Don Antonio Scala, the priest who recently resigned from all his ecclesiastical duties due to an affair with a married parishioner, spoke today on "Storie Italiane" on Rai 1 with Eleonora Daniele.

“I don’t regret what I did, it was a gift from God,” Don Antonio said during the phone call. He explained that his relationship was not a random choice but something “very strong,” which changed his life irreversibly.

“I don’t know the future, but I hope to continue with this woman because we love each other,” Don Scala added. He stressed that their union was inevitable, saying, “We can deceive men, but God ultimately sees everything and knows everything. I thought about going to the bishop and telling him ‘I did this’ and taking responsibility.”

Don Antonio also expressed his affection for the community of Ischia, hoping that the faithful will not distance themselves from the Church despite his personal decision. “I carry everyone in my heart,” he said, “but this is my life, my choice that has nothing to do with them. I am not going back, I am done and I no longer feel like being a priest. A confession would not be enough, a conversion is needed.”

This case has sparked great interest and debate on the island, reflecting the complex dynamics between vocation, love and personal responsibility within the social and religious fabric of Ischia.
