Discovering that they were insured with a fake policy only after a check by the police: this is the scenario they found themselves in 1,5 million Italians in the last year, victims of scams related to RC car.
The phenomenon, which is constantly growing, has caused economic damages of approximately 620 million euro, with an average loss of 400 euro per personAn investigation has revealed this Facile.it, conducted by mUp Research and Norstat, which has shed light on an alarming problem: almost one in two defrauded drivers (44%) chooses not to report the incident.
According to the data collected, the failure to resort to the authorities is often linked to reasons economic or psychological: 28% considers the damage too low to be reported; another 28% he is convinced that he would not be able to recover the lost money; 22% prefers to avoid family members finding out about the scam and 19% he is ashamed of having fallen for the scam.

To counteract the phenomenon, Facile.it and Non-Profit Consumerism they decided to extend the project "Stop the Scams" (www.stopalletruffe.it) also to the car insurance sector. The portal, already active since 2023 to report fraud in the market electricity and gas, has helped reduce attempted fraud on utility bills 10% in just one year.
Now, the initiative focuses on protecting drivers, offering useful tools to recognize and prevent scams: guides, videos, podcasts and answers to the most common questions. Buying a fake policy does not only mean suffering a financial loss: the unsuspecting motorist risks circulate without insurance coverage, incurring in heavy sanctions and, in the event of an accident, serious legal and financial consequences.
"Reporting even just one attempted scam is essential to help authorities intervene and protect other consumers.”, underline the promoters of the initiative, Gabriele and Ghizzoni. The battle against insurance fraud is open: being informed and reporting remains the best weapon to stop scammers.

It is truly incredible that so many people have fallen for these scams, but I wonder if there are ways to avoid suffering damage. The fake policy is a serious problem, but many do not report and this does not help.
