The city of Naples was the scene of a new episode of urban violence on the evening of January 8, when a bus on line 147 was targeted by a child gang in Piazza Giambattista Vico.
A group of young people reportedly threw metal objects, presumably parts of a Christmas tree, at the bus, causing the driver's side windshield to break. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the driver and passengers experienced moments of great fear, having to abandon the bus and continue their journey by alternative means.
The incident was promptly reported by some passers-by to MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli, known for his fight against youth crime. Borrelli commented on the incident by underlining the seriousness of the situation: “Next time, in addition to the windshield, a human life and the hope of a safe city could be shattered. Now a task force is needed to eradicate this phenomenon.”
This latest raid by baby gangs underlines the urgency of targeted interventions to counter the growing youth violence on the streets of Naples.
“It is yet another act of vandalism against a public transport vehicle” - declared the Green-Sinister alliance deputy Francesco Emilio Borrelli - “above all it is yet another raid carried out by baby gangs who have no intention of taking a step back and leaving in peace the city on which they have had their often blood-stained hands for years.
The phenomenon has long been out of control, but unfortunately it seems that we are relying on prayers to prevent yet another tragedy from happening. However, we can do much more than just hope and pray, we can and must monitor the territory and create a special task force to stop this horde of violent and criminal kids who have already caused deaths.
Next time, it might not just be a bus windshield that gets shattered, but also the life of an innocent person and the hopes of a safe city.”
