Directed by Carlo Cerciello, Imma Villa will perform Scannassurice, as part of the “We love Enzo” festival, on Saturday, January 18, 2025, and Sunday, January 19, 2025, at the Teatro Nuovo in Naples.
A Journey Into the Meanders of Naples
“Scannasurice”, presented by Teatro Elicantropo Anonima Romanzi, offers a symbolic and reflective descent into the post-earthquake Neapolitan hypogeum. The protagonist, an androgynous character, lives among the rubble of the city and the mysterious presences of Neapolitan culture, ranging from legends such as the Bella 'mbriana and the Munaciello, searching for a lost identity.
The Vision of Carlo Cerciello
More than forty years after its debut in 1982, Cerciello renews the powerful message of the drama written by Moscato, claiming to want to escape the “unhealthy oleography” of Naples. The work presents itself with an enveloping scenography, curated by Roberto Crea, with the sound of Hubert Westkemper and a lighting design by Cesare Accetta.
A Complex and Universal Character
The protagonist of “Scannasurice” is a “femminiello” from the Spanish Quarters, but the intention is to go beyond sexual and Latin identity to reach a mythological dimension. Played by Imma Villa, the character represents a journey through solitude and desperation, culminating in a tragic but poetic ending, symbol of a city and its inhabitants.
