At the Salicelle Oasis, in the Capua area (CE), along the Volturno river Ecopneus, a non-profit company specializing in the management of End-of-Life Tyres (ELT), has removed 1.920 kilograms of illegally abandoned tyres.
The operation, requested by the Vice-Prefect Cyrus Sylvester, in charge of combating arson of waste in Campania, was made possible thanks to the collaboration between the Province of Caserta, the Consorzio di Bonifica del Basso Volturno and Ecopneus. The cleanup freed an area of over 1.000 square meters before the filling of the reservoir planned with the reopening of the dam on the Volturno, thus avoiding that waste was transported to the sea with disastrous consequences for the ecosystem and aquatic fauna.
Giuseppina Carnimeo, General Manager of Ecopneus, underlined the importance of the initiative: “Environmental protection is an act of responsibility towards the territory and future generations. Interventions such as that of the Oasi delle Salicelle represent concrete responses to environmental threats, thanks to the synergy between institutions and private individuals. Since 2013, through the Memorandum of Understanding, we have recovered over 23 thousand tons of PFU, reclaiming critical areas and investing resources to ensure timely and effective interventions”.
The intervention is part of Memorandum of Understanding for the management of end-of-life tires in the Provinces of Naples and Caserta, signed in 2013 by the Ministry of the Environment and the Prefecture, together with institutional representatives and Ecopneus. Cyrus Sylvester, Vice-Prefect, highlighted the effectiveness of the Protocol: "After more than a decade, the Protocol with Ecopneus continues to be a strategic tool to address emergencies related to the illegal dumping of PFU. The Prefect of Caserta, Lucia Volpe, recently reiterated the importance of rationalizing and improving monitoring to prevent environmental degradation and protect the territories of Land of fires".
