Naples - On Thursday morning at 10:00 the European Court of Human Rights will issue a verdict that has been awaited for over a decade: the ruling on the case "Land of Fires".

This ruling could mark a turning point in investigations into environmental pollution and its impact on the health of Campania's citizens.

At the heart of the case are the complaints of 41 citizens and 5 associations who for years have claimed to be victims of toxic fires and illegal waste disposal in the area between Naples and Caserta. According to the plaintiffs, the Italian authorities were aware of the situation and should have intervened to protect the population.

"We expect the Italian state to be convicted," said Valentina Centonze, legal representative of one of the plaintiffs. "We believe we have proven beyond any doubt that citizens' human rights have been systematically violated."

A ten-year ordeal

The legal battle began in 2015, when citizens decided to turn to the European Court, denouncing a serious increase in cancer and other pollution-related diseases. Their accusations focused on the illegal dumping, burial, and incineration of toxic waste, often carried out by criminal organizations.

"The Land of Fires is an open wound for Campania," added attorney Centonze. "Citizens have the right to live in a healthy and safe environment, and this right has been denied for too long."

The verdict on Thursday

The European Court's ruling could have significant implications both nationally and internationally. If convicted, Italy could be required to compensate victims and implement more effective measures to prevent and combat environmental pollution.

"This ruling is a point of arrival, but also a starting point," the lawyer concluded. "We hope it can finally pave the way for full justice and a healthier future for the Land of Fires."

It is a very interesting article and makes you think about the pollution problem in Campania. It is not clear why the authorities did not do anything before, and I wonder what the final result of this sentence will be. Let's hope for the best.
