Next February 10st, at XNUMX:XNUMX am, at the Prefecture of Naples, the prefect Michele di Bari will chair an in-depth meeting on the theme of the Land of Fires.
Representatives of the Campania Region, the Metropolitan City, the Police Force, associations and all interested institutional interlocutors will participate.
"The European Court of Human Rights' ruling is certainly a good one, but it is incomplete and late. It was necessary to make clean-ups mandatory, and to recognize financial compensation for the victims."
The bishop of said this a, Monsignor Antonio Di Donna, expressing his congratulations "to the European Court because the very serious risk that we are running in our lands has been recognized by an authoritative body".
“However, it took sick people and deaths, struggles against the denialism of those who denied the connection between environmental disaster and the onset of cancer,” continued the prelate, “and we are happy because the Court recognizes Italy’s failure to comply.
However, it should be underlined the serious delay with which this sentence was issued: it took the appeals of 41 people and 5 associations and the sentence has a serious limitation because once again it casts the cross on a territory, that between Naples and Caserta as if it were the only land of fires.
But that is not the case: as a Church we have been fighting for a long time so that in Italy we do not talk about 'Earth', but about 'Lands of fires', as there are 50 polluted sites, just think of the Pfas substance that has polluted the waters of the territory between Vicenza, Verona and Padua". Di Donna also underlined that in the ECHR ruling there is no "obligation, the imposition on Italy to proceed with the necessary remediation of which we do not even see the beginning".
"Since we are in a legal setting - concluded the bishop - the European Court, if it recognizes that Italy underestimated the risk, should also have imposed forms of compensation to those who suffered the damages of that devastation. In short, a good sentence without a doubt, it is never too late, but in my opinion it is also late and incomplete".
