Naples – A ray of hope for those with vision problems: Monaldi Hospital has taken a major step forward, successfully performing the first corneal transplant.

The delicate and innovative intervention was carried out by Dr. Erica Paolillo, under the guidance of Professor Francesco Calabrò, director of the Complex Operating Unit of Ophthalmology.

The patient, a seventy-two-year-old, suffered from severe corneal opacity due to a previous cataract surgery. Thanks to the Dsaek technique, which involves the use of an ultra-thin corneal flap, doctors were able to restore the man's sight.

“It's an extraordinary result,” commented Professor Calabrò. “This intervention demonstrates the excellence of our teams and our ability to offer patients the most advanced therapies.”

The general director of the Colli Hospital Trust, Anna Iervolino, underlined the importance of this milestone: “The Ophthalmology of the Monaldi confirms itself increasingly at the forefront, investing in innovative technologies and constantly expanding its range of services. This success is the result of great teamwork and makes us proud to be able to offer our patients the highest quality care”.

Corneal transplantation represents hope for thousands of people suffering from corneal diseases, giving them back the ability to see the world with new eyes.

What is the Dsaek technique?

La Dsaek It is a surgical technique that allows the internal part of the cornea to be replaced, which allows the passage of light to the retina. Compared to traditional corneal transplants, this technique has numerous advantages, including less invasiveness, faster visual recovery and a reduced risk of complications.
