A 40-year-old from the province of Naples was caught red-handed and arrested by the Carabinieri, accused of aggravated and continued fraud against an 80-year-old woman.

The report by the victim's son was decisive, as he had sensed the deception after his mother had been contacted by telephone by a man pretending to be a lieutenant of the Carabinieri.

The so-called official had asked for money to cover alleged legal expenses relating to the woman's son, who was being held at the barracks after being involved in a car accident.

The Candela military intervened promptly, blocking the scammer as he was heading to the elderly woman's house on board a rental car.

During the search, the man was found in possession of gold jewelry and 700 euros in cash, which were the proceeds of another scam, committed a few hours earlier to the detriment of an elderly woman from Rionero in Vulture. The investigation also revealed that the 40-year-old was planning another robbery, this time to the detriment of an elderly couple, using the same ruse of the fake road accident.

Eleven Fraudsters Arrested in the Province of Foggia in One Year

The case fits into a broader context: from February 2024 to January 2025, the police of Foggia have identified eleven scammers specializing in defrauding elderly people, often thanks to the promptness of victims and family members in reporting suspicions. A worrying phenomenon that requires ever greater attention and collaboration from citizens.
