In 2025, Italy will confirm its leading role in global and European tourism, thanks to the timeless charm of its iconic destinations and its ability to attract new market segments.

This is what emerges from the processing of the data of theTourism Observatory di Visit Italy, which notes how tourist presences, estimated at 448,7 million in 2024, place Italy in third place among European countries with 15,2% of total presences in Europe.

International flows are growing (+1,4%), led by Germany, United States, France and the United Kingdom, while there was a slight contraction in domestic tourism (-2,5%). The average stay fell to 6,47 nights (-10,4%), reflecting a preference for short and multi-destination trips.

The composition of the tourist offer

The Italian tourist offer is distinguished by a variety of elements that enrich the visitor experience. Among the main pillars of the offer, the strong presence of the restaurant and venue sector (43%) that highlights the central role of the culinary heritage and Italian hospitality that attracts tourists from all over the world.

The growing weight of the hospitality sector (38%), with a preference for flexible and personalized solutions, underlines the ever-increasing popularity of short-term rentals, chosen to meet the needs of comfort and adaptability of modern travelers. While 16% is dedicated to the world of attractions, a sign that this diversification reflects the ability of Italian tourism to evolve, adapting to changing market preferences and focusing on quality and innovation to maintain its global appeal.

Travel trends

The vast majority, equal to 61.8%, choose Italy as a holiday destination. As for destination preferences, art cities are confirmed as the main choice with 36.7%, followed by seaside destinations with 30.6%, mountain areas attract 29.9%, while 2.8% of visitors opt for other destinations.

The analysis of the most searched destinations on VisitItaly.eu reveals how in 2024, travellers' preferences have shifted towards discovering more authentic experiences.

Among the most clicked destinations, Naples, famous for its lively culture and the beauty of the Gulf, which continues to register a strong increase in popularity. The city fascinates with its thousand-year history, its cuisine rich in authentic flavors and the breathtaking landscape of the coast. From the lively alleys of the historic center to its spectacular beaches, the city offers a unique experience that mixes culture, gastronomy and natural beauty. And

Among its most sought-after attractions, the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, which offers a fascinating journey through time, witnessing the daily life of an ancient Roman city frozen by the eruption of Vesuvius. But there is a risk that the growing tourist demand on the city will put even more pressure on its accommodation capacity.

“Italy is experiencing a paradox: while cities like Rome, Venice, Naples and Florence are facing overtourism, with over 30 million visitors per year, around 2.500 villages are at risk of depopulation, with 47% of small towns experiencing a reduction in population.

The Jubilee, which will attract millions of visitors from all over the world, represents a unique opportunity with positive economic repercussions and global visibility, but it risks worsening the pressure on Rome, and on the most important Italian cities, already tested by mass tourism. To face this challenge, it is necessary to manage tourist flows, promote sustainable development, responding in an innovative way to the challenges of contemporary tourism,” explains Ruben Santopietro, CEO and founder of Visit Italy.

Impact on the territory

The Jubilee of 2025 will have a significant impact on Italian tourism, with an estimated 35 million arrivals, with economic effects and tourist flows that will be felt throughout the country. The management of flows and the enhancement of neighboring destinations therefore emerge as a priority.

In Naples, it is estimated that 18 million visitors will arrive, with an increase of at least 4,5 million compared to 2024.

Naples, among the big cities, must be ready to offer opportunities and be attractive for an audience looking for authentic experiences. With adequate marketing strategies and infrastructure investments, Naples can transform the tourist influx into a lever for economic growth and the valorization of the local heritage.
