Giugliano – On paper a residential street but in all respects an open-air illegal landfill.
In Via Arco Sant'Antonio in the municipality of Giugliano in Campania there is a constant nightly coming and going of vehicles that arrive loaded with bags, bulky items, and all kinds of waste and leave empty. Illegal dumping has made the area almost unlivable.
“There is literally a river of garbage,” said a resident who spoke to the Green-Left alliance MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli. “Cars and vans arrive continuously, unloading everything, even mattresses.
It happens especially in the evening and at night since the dumpers are protected by the darkness that reigns supreme here despite the presence of the street lighting poles, installed 10 years ago and never put into operation. The lack of light is also a safety problem for us who live here”.
"We must intervene immediately, it is an ecological bomb. We ask the administration to start a cleanup as soon as possible but we also need camera traps to discourage and trap the polluters.
Certainly restoring the lighting would be a good deterrent, at least in part, and would give greater security to the inhabitants, so it must be done.
There are too many isolated areas exploited as landfills with enormous environmental and public health damage. We need more prevention by strengthening video surveillance systems and giving more guarantees to the judiciary. Too many eco-crimes and too few magistrates and so many cases end up in prescription” - declared Borrelli.
