Naples – Despite the recent seismic swarm that affected the area of Campi Flegrei, there is no imminent risk of eruption. This was assured by Mauro Di Vito, director of the Vesuvius Observatory, during a public meeting. The observatory, with its 108 employees, carries out continuous and detailed monitoring of the situation.
Bradyseismic Dynamics
Since 2005, the Campi Flegrei have been subject to bradyseismic dynamics that cause soil deformation visible mainly in Solfatara and Pisciarelli. “We are witnessing a strong 'degassing' of the soil,” explained Di Vito, highlighting the importance of monitoring the submarine caldera with a unique network at a global level.
The Seismic Situation
The seismic area extends from Bagnoli to the coasts of Bacoli and is closely connected to the present seismicity. Di Vito specified that, despite the 556 recorded events, most of these have a very low magnitude. Only a small percentage exceed magnitude 1, indicating that, although frequent, these seismic events do not represent an immediate threat.
